A primary school in the Shankill area of Belfast is set to undergo a major expansion with the addition of 21 new classrooms. The Education Authority’s plan for Glenwood Primary School at 4-22 Upper Riga Street Belfast has been approved by the Belfast City Council Planning Committee. This expansion will include the demolition of the existing three-storey block from the 1960s and the caretaker’s house, making way for a split-level two-storey extension and the refurbishment of the original school building.

The new facilities will include 21 classrooms, including four support classrooms, a nurture suite, and a school canteen. Additionally, there will be new boundary walls with railings, new landscaping, car parking, and new access points from both the Shankill Road and Upper Riga Street. During the construction phase, four temporary classroom units will be used. It is important to note that there will be no increase in pupil numbers due to this extension.

The council planning report highlighted that the buildings to be demolished are from the 1960s and do not hold any architectural significance or contribute to the distinctive character of the area. As such, the proposal to demolish these buildings and construct the new extension was recommended for approval by Belfast council officers and received unanimous support from elected representatives.

The project aims to enhance the overall character of the area by providing modern and functional facilities for the students and staff of Glenwood Primary School. The approval of this extension marks an important development for the school and the community it serves.
