Another 40 meters of peace wall is set to be removed as part of a shared space project on Ballygomartin Road in west Belfast. This project follows the opening of the £7 million Black Mountain Shared Space earlier this year. The goal of this phase is to create a new building where multiple community organizations can work alongside the main BMSS building.
The Belfast City Council Planning Committee approved Phase two of the development in October 2023. The new building will consist of eight office spaces, each equipped with accessible facilities. The offices will generate rental income to support the sustainability of the adjacent building. By bringing grassroots community organizations together on one site, the hope is to foster stronger connections and collaboration on community projects.
Lord Mayor Councillor Micky Murray expressed his excitement about the positive impact that Black Mountain Shared Space is having on community relations in the area. He highlighted the importance of creating a hub where organizations can share ideas, work together on projects, and address local issues such as unemployment and poor health. This project is not only beneficial for the community but also contributes to the regeneration of the city.
Funded by the International Fund for Ireland, the Department for Communities, and the Department of Justice, Phase two of the BMSS project aims to continue promoting collaboration across historically divided communities. Seamus Corr, Manager of Black Mountain Shared Space, emphasized the significance of this new development in facilitating closer cooperation among local organizations.
Overall, the removal of more peace walls and the construction of new community office units are significant steps towards promoting unity and cooperation in Belfast. This project not only creates a space for organizations to work together but also contributes to the long-term development and regeneration of the city. The ongoing efforts to bring communities together and build trust are crucial for creating a more inclusive and prosperous future for all residents.
