Demi Nelson, a 23-year-old woman from Co Antrim, has defied the odds and opened her own business after surviving a life-threatening heart condition. From a young age, Demi experienced fainting episodes, but doctors dismissed her symptoms as hormonal issues. It wasn’t until she was 16 that she was diagnosed with a third degree av block, a total heart blockage, and underwent emergency surgery to fit a pacemaker.
Despite a botched initial surgery and ongoing health challenges, Demi persevered and underwent corrective surgery that saved her life. Now, she runs her own hairdressing business, Hair by Demi in Whiteabbey, and is using her experience to raise awareness about heart conditions and inspire others to pursue their dreams.
Demi’s journey has been marked by struggles and setbacks, but her resilience and determination have led her to a place of gratitude and purpose. She values each day and sees her survival as a second chance to make a difference in the world. Dr. Chew, the cardiac surgeon who treated her, played a pivotal role in not only saving her life but also improving her quality of life.
In addition to running her business, Demi is passionate about giving back to the community and supporting families facing similar challenges. She has set up charity buckets in her shop to raise funds for pediatric cardiac services in Northern Ireland. Having experienced firsthand the emotional and financial strain of medical treatment, Demi wants to ease the burden for other families going through similar situations.
Through her resilience, determination, and commitment to helping others, Demi Nelson’s journey from near death to entrepreneurship is a testament to the power of hope and perseverance. Her story serves as an inspiration to all who face adversity and a reminder to never give up on chasing your dreams, no matter the obstacles in your path.
