Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is a hidden disability that affects one in 14 people in Northern Ireland. This condition can make it challenging for individuals to understand and use language, leading to difficulties in education, employment, and social interactions. Two young people, Chloe Baxter and Conall Walls, who are living with DLD, will be sharing their stories at an event at Stormont on DLD Day.

Chloe Baxter, who works at M&S and with horses, and Conall Walls, who works in an accounting firm, have both benefited from speech and language therapy at Thornfield House Special School. This dedicated support has helped them thrive in their respective careers and personal lives. Ruth Sedgewick, Head of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists in Northern Ireland, emphasizes the importance of early intervention and specialist support for individuals with DLD to help them reach their full potential.

While Chloe and Conall’s success stories are inspiring, more support is needed to ensure equitable opportunities for all children with DLD. Thornfield House School is currently the only regional speech and language school providing specialized support, indicating a need for more resources and trained professionals in this field. By raising awareness and advocating for better support systems, individuals with DLD can overcome the challenges they face and lead fulfilling lives.
