Calls for reform of rape laws by a Derry woman who was sexually assaulted at the age of 18 by a taxi driver have won the backing of the SDLP. Derry woman Chloe, who was sexually assaulted at the age of 18 in 2017, told Belfast Live last month – after her attacker was finally sentenced – that the laws defining rape are “outdated” and should be reformed. The SDLP MLA Cara Hunter has backed her calls for reform and praised the Derry woman’s “strength and bravery” in speaking out.

At present, UK criminal law requires prosecutors to prove a penis was used to penetrate a victim before a perpetrator can be convicted of the specific offence of rape. Other forms of penetration without consent are considered forms of sexual assault – but not rape, unless the victim was penetrated with a penis. Chloe believes that the impact on the survivor is the same, regardless of the type of penetration that occurred.

Cara Hunter has joined with the leading charity Nexus, which offers support including specialised, professional counseling to sexual abuse survivors, in supporting Chloe’s calls for reform. Hunter stated, “The strength and bravery of Chloe to come forward and launch this campaign to change the definition of rape is inspiring and I stand fully behind her.” She emphasized the importance of treating crimes like sexual assault with the seriousness they deserve, ensuring that perpetrators face the fullest force of the law.

Hunter also highlighted the need for tougher sentencing guidelines and better support for victims throughout the criminal justice process. She is working on a bill to support rape victims and survivors so they feel empowered to come forward and receive the necessary support.

It is crucial for victims of domestic and sexual abuse to seek help and support. The 24hr Domestic and Sexual Abuse Helpline is available 24/7 for individuals impacted by such abuse, offering webchat and email services as well. This helpline, hosted by Nexus on behalf of the Departments of Communities, Health, and Justice, provides essential assistance to those in need.

In conclusion, the efforts of Chloe and the support from Cara Hunter and Nexus are vital in pushing for reform of rape laws to better protect and support survivors of sexual assault. By raising awareness and advocating for change, they are working towards a justice system that truly serves the needs of victims and ensures that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.
