Charity Struggles to Meet Demand for Annual Winter Appeal, Leaving Many Families in Northern Ireland Facing a Bleak Christmas

A North Belfast charity, Mental Health Movement (MHM), is sending out a desperate plea as it struggles to keep up with the overwhelming demand for its annual winter appeal. Families in Northern Ireland are at risk of having a bleak Christmas this year, with many unable to afford food and gifts for their loved ones.

Founded by Ardoyne man Caoimhin McNulty in 2019, MHM aims to combat the rising rates of suicide and poor mental health in the region. The organization, fully led by youth, believes in the power of young people educating each other on mental health issues. Through workshops in schools and youth clubs, MHM works to provide valuable information on self-confidence, drugs, harm reduction, and peer support.

Increased Demand for Toys

Despite their noble efforts, MHM is facing challenges in its Annual Winter Appeal, particularly in collecting new and pre-loved toys for children in need. This year, the charity has received over 140 referrals for toys, marking a significant increase from previous years. Caoimhin McNulty shared, “We hoped to make this Christmas unforgettable for kids who need it most, but the donations have been slower coming in this year.”

Struggles of Working Families

The harsh reality of the situation hit home when MHM received a referral for a mother of four who had to choose between heating, food, electricity, or toys for her children. Despite being a working parent, the financial strain left her unable to provide toys for her kids. This heartbreaking decision is one that many families are facing, as the choice between basic necessities and holiday cheer becomes increasingly difficult.

Appeal for Support

As the deadline for donations approaches, MHM is calling on the community to step up and lend a helping hand. The charity’s office at 46 Oldpark Road has been accepting donations every Saturday, with a final drop-off scheduled for Saturday, December 21st from 12 noon to 6 pm. Those who wish to contribute can do so directly through the Mental Health Movement PayPal or by contacting caoimhin@mentalhealthni.org for more information.

In a year filled with uncertainties and challenges, your support can make a significant difference in brightening the holiday season for families in need. Let’s come together as a community to ensure that every child has a gift to open on Christmas Day.
