An 11-year-old boy has been charged in connection with disorder in South Belfast last month. The allegations stem from public disorder in the Broadway area in July which led to part of the M1 being closed. During the incident on July 15 and 16, police officers were attacked with petrol bombs, bricks, and bottles, and both police vehicles and cars belonging to the public were damaged.

The PSNI South Belfast released a statement on Monday, August 12, confirming that the boy has been charged with riot, possessing petrol bombs in suspicious circumstances, possessing an offensive weapon in a public place, throwing petrol bombs, and causing an explosion likely to endanger life or property. The 11-year-old is scheduled to appear before Belfast Youth Court on Friday, September 6, and all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

In addition to the 11-year-old, a 14-year-old teenager was arrested over the weekend in connection with the disorder in South Belfast. The teenager is being questioned by officers regarding the violence that occurred in the Broadway area on July 15 and 16. Furthermore, a 38-year-old man has been charged and appeared in court facing charges of riot, possessing an offensive weapon in public, and indecent behavior related to the same disorder. He was granted bail but was prohibited from returning to the area.

Moreover, a 15-year-old male also faces charges after being identified on drone footage as one of the rioters throwing masonry on the second night of unrest. The situation in South Belfast has led to multiple arrests and charges being brought against individuals involved in the disorder.

It is concerning to see individuals as young as 11 and 14 being charged in connection with such serious offenses. Addressing the root causes of such behavior, providing support and guidance to young people, and fostering a sense of community and responsibility are crucial in preventing similar incidents in the future. The authorities, community leaders, and parents must work together to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals, especially the youth, in the area.
