Access to Student Loans Approved for Northern Ireland Medical Students
Students at the Graduate Entry Medical School at Ulster University’s Derry-Londonderry campus will now have the opportunity to access tuition fee loans starting from the 2025/26 academic year. This announcement, made today, marks a significant change as previously, graduate entry medical students were unable to secure Government loans to cover their university tuition fees.
Economy Minister Conor Murphy expressed his support for this decision, emphasizing the importance of expanding student numbers at Ulster University’s Magee campus. The Graduate Entry Medical School plays a crucial role in this expansion, and the introduction of these loans will make studying at the Derry campus more financially feasible for students. Health Minister Mike Nesbitt also voiced his agreement with this initiative.
Minister Murphy highlighted the significance of offering financial assistance to medical students, stating that it will help attract more students to Magee and ultimately contribute to producing a greater number of medical professionals for the health service. This step is seen as a positive advancement towards achieving the goal of 10,000 student places at Magee.
Ulster University Vice-Chancellor Paul Bartholomew commended the decision, noting that it will lead to broader access to medical education in the North West region. The availability of financial support for medical students is expected to enhance the appeal of the Derry-Londonderry campus, particularly for graduate-entry candidates who are essential for the future medical workforce.
Furthermore, Vice-Chancellor Bartholomew expressed gratitude towards Minister Murphy for providing this crucial support to students. The university is committed to collaborating with relevant stakeholders to further develop the Derry-Londonderry campus, including the construction of a new School of Medicine building as part of the Derry-Londonderry City and Strabane Region City Deal and Inclusive Future Fund.
In conclusion, the approval of student loans for medical students at Ulster University’s Graduate Entry Medical School signifies a positive step towards making medical education more accessible and sustainable in Northern Ireland. This development is expected to benefit both students pursuing medical careers and the broader healthcare system in the region.
