Improved Park Accessibility in Belfast: Residents Invited to Share Feedback on Opening Hours and Lighting

Belfast City Council is reaching out to the community for input on the operational hours of the Forth Meadow Greenway and several key parks in the area. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility and safety for all residents and visitors to these outdoor spaces.

Consultation Process and Key Areas of Focus

Residents and users of the Forth Meadow Community Greenway are encouraged to participate in the consultation regarding its opening hours. The greenway, a 12km stretch connecting north and west Belfast, has the potential to offer 24/7 accessibility with the installation of lighting along its main route.

The council will also be seeking feedback on the opening hours for Ormeau Park, Falls Park, Woodvale Park, and Belmont Park. These parks play a vital role in the community, providing green spaces for recreation and relaxation. The consultation will explore the possibility of extended hours and address any local factors that may influence this decision.

Community Engagement and Safety Measures

To ensure the safety and security of park users, a ‘Forth Meadow Community Greenway Gate Closure Protocol’ will be established in collaboration with the PSNI. This protocol will allow for gate closures in response to security assessments, enhancing overall safety within these public spaces.

Residents are encouraged to share their views during the consultation period, which runs until February 12. In-person information sessions will also be held at various locations to gather feedback directly from the community. Additionally, an online survey will be available on the council’s website for those unable to attend in person.

Future Plans and Opportunities for Development

The consultation process will inform recommendations for extended opening hours, which will be presented to elected members in the Spring. If approved, a one-year trial period will be implemented to assess the impact of any changes. The findings will also guide potential capital investment in lighting infrastructure for parks like Ormeau Park and Belmont Park, which currently lack sufficient lighting.

Overall, this consultation presents a unique opportunity for community members to contribute to the development and enhancement of these public spaces. By sharing their feedback and insights, residents can help shape the future accessibility and safety measures in Belfast’s parks and greenways.
