Antrim and Newtownabbey councillors have announced a price increase for non-residents attending the 2025 Enchanted Winter Garden event at Antrim Castle Gardens. The decision was made during a meeting at Mossley Mill last week, where the council’s Community Development Committee discussed the proposed rise in ticket charges. This annual event, spanning 19 evenings leading up to Christmas, draws around 120,000 visitors from across Northern Ireland and beyond, with a significant portion hailing from Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough.
Price Adjustment for Residents and Non-Residents
The report presented to the committee highlighted the escalating costs associated with hosting the Enchanted Winter Garden over the years. Despite a 20% increase in the cost of goods and services between 2021 and 2024, ticket charges for residents remained stagnant since 2021, set at £6 per adult, £4 per child (under 2’s free), and £18 for a family of four. Non-residents, on the other hand, were charged £10 per adult, £7 per child, and £30 for a family of four.
Councillors’ Perspectives and Decision Making
During the meeting, various councillors expressed their views on the proposed price adjustments. Threemilewater DUP Councillor Mark Cooper BEM put forth the motion to increase admission fees for both residents and non-residents, which was seconded by Antrim Ulster Unionist Cllr Leah Smyth. Sinn Fein Cllr Maighréad Ní Chonghaile acknowledged the need for increased revenue but emphasized the importance of affordability, especially for residents.
Community Impact and Future Considerations
The council members deliberated on the balance between maintaining accessibility for local families and ensuring the financial sustainability of the Enchanted Winter Garden event. Concerns were raised about potential implications for ratepayers if costs were not adjusted accordingly. Ultimately, the committee agreed to raise the ticket charges for non-residents in 2025, with Cllr Cooper’s revised proposal receiving support from Cllr Smyth.
As the Enchanted Winter Garden continues to evolve and attract visitors from far and wide, the council remains committed to providing a memorable and high-quality experience for all attendees. The decision to adjust ticket prices reflects a strategic approach to financial management while preserving the enchanting essence of this beloved seasonal event.
